JP Duminy named captain of the Delhi Daredevils in IPL 2015

Delhi Daredevils management has appointed the South African left hander batsman JP Duminy as their new captain for the upcoming season of the IPL this year. Before Duminy the services were performed by the English batsman Kevin Pietersen last year.

Along with Kevin Pietersen 12 other players were released from their contracts this year by the Delhi Daredevils due to the overall poor performance by the team.

It was poor show by the Daredevils last year as they finished up last in the ranks. They only won 2 games out of 14 in 2014 and hence the management decided to induct new players in the team and release some of the old ones.

Duminy not only survived the axe but was also named as the captain despite the Daredevils had some other good choices in the form of Yuvraj Singh and Angelo Matthews but after a brief discussion the management decided to give the job to JP Duminy.

After having a really poor season last year the Daredevils management came up with some new plans and in result they first bought some of the big names being auctioned for this year’s edition. Daredevils are the biggest buyers for this year.

Yuvraj Singh was the most expensive buy this year. He was bought by the Daredevils for a whooping amount of 2.67 million USD (16 crores). Yuvraj was also seen as the best contender for the captaincy spot as well but he Daredevils management had some other plans.

Hemant Dua the chief executive of the Delhi Daredevils said that JP Duminy was the best choice to be our next captain. He is a cool and calm sort of a person and the entire playing unit as well as the management respects him a lot.

Duminy has expressed his desires to lead a team but wasn’t given a chance till last year when South Africa played a three match T20 series with Australia. Duminy captained the side in place of Faf Du Plessis who was given a rest.

The major factor that made the Daredevils management to go with Duminy was his excellent relations with the head coach Gary Kirsten. Kirsten has always backed Duminy is his international and domestic career.

It was Kirsten who recalled Duminy in 2012 south Africa’s tour to England as a replacement for injured Mark Boucher.  Duminy always gets the main role in Kirsten’s plan and he thinks of Duminy to be a born leader and a potential match winner.

Duminy also has a great respect among the South African players and in the domestic circle. He is the president of the South African players association.

For us Duminy is the best choice, Kirsten talked to the media. He has the character, experience and the motive to lead the team forward. I have seen him playing in the domestic circles in South Africa and then emerging to be a key factor in the South African national team.

During all these years Duminy has been remarkable and showed a strong character. Duminy was also the best batsman for the Daredevils in the last season of the IPL. He scored 410 runs with an average of 50 and his strike rate was 134.

Duminy would need the support from the senior players like Yuvraj and Matthews. We wanted not to put any pressure on Yuvraj, we want him to go out and play freely without keeping in mind that he is also the captain and gets himself in any pressure, Hemant talked to the media.
